Deconstructing a PEB
To fully appreciate the efficiency of Pre-Engineered Buildings, it helps to understand their fundamental components. Here is a breakdown of the anatomy of an industrial shed.
1. Primary Framing
This is the main skeleton of the building, consisting of built-up I-shaped columns and rafters. These are designed using rigid frame principles to support the primary loads of the structure.
2. Secondary Framing
Consisting of Z or C-shaped purlins and girts, secondary framing supports the roof and wall panels and transfers loads to the primary framing. They also provide longitudinal stability.
3. Roof and Wall Panels
These are the skin of the building. Typically made from profiled galvanized or Galvalume steel sheets, they provide weather protection. Insulated sandwich panels are also common for temperature control.
4. Accessories
This category includes everything else: skylights for natural lighting, ridge ventilators for air circulation, flashings, gutters, downpipes, and customized elements like crane runway beams and mezzanine joists.
