FAQ: Designing Mezzanine Floors in PEB Structures

Published: September 2025 5 min read min read

Understanding Mezzanine Floors in PEBs

Mezzanine floors are an excellent way to maximize the vertical space within an industrial shed. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions regarding their design and implementation.

Can I add a mezzanine floor to an existing PEB?

Yes, but it depends on the existing foundation and primary framing. If the original structure wasn't designed for the additional load, structural strengthening (retrofitting) will be required. It is always more cost-effective to plan for a mezzanine during the initial design phase.

What are the typical load capacities for industrial mezzanines?

Load capacities vary greatly depending on the usage. Office spaces typically require around 250-300 kg/sq.m, while heavy storage or manufacturing equipment may require 1000 kg/sq.m or more. The framing system must be designed accordingly.

What decking options are available?

Common options include steel decking panels with a concrete topping (composite deck), chequered plates, or heavy-duty grating, depending on whether the floor is for pedestrian traffic, storage, or machinery.
